Zanzibar's white-sand photos suggest a price tag to match. The reality is friendlier: with the right season, the right side of the island and a few local habits, paradise costs less than most city breaks.
Timing is everything
June and early December sit just outside peak season - same beaches, same weather windows, hotel rates often 30–40% lower. Avoid April and May, when the long rains close many properties entirely.
Where to stay
The east coast (Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe) offers beautiful, quieter beaches at notably lower prices than the resort-heavy north around Nungwi. Smaller boutique guesthouses routinely outperform big resorts on breakfast, character and care - at half the rate.
Spend where it counts
Eat local at least half the time - seafood at beach bandas costs a fraction of hotel menus and is usually better. Skip the private transfers in favour of shared shuttles, and put the savings into the experiences that justify the trip: a Stone Town walking tour, a spice farm visit, a sunset dhow cruise.
